HDMI Audio Problems

I just purchased a 2.5GHz iMac  with Mac OS X 10.6.8.  It works great, except for some trouble with the HDMI cord when connecting it to our TV.  The picture is fine, but the audio does not work for any of the windows we drag over to the TV.  The audio comes out of the computer speakers, but not out of the better TV speakers.  The only time the TV audio worked was when we received a call on Skype.  The audio of the ringing went on over the TV (as well as the computer), but the audio of the video conversation did not.  It has also failed for ESPN3, Hulu, Netflix, etc. Has anyone else had this problem?  Is there some kind of setting that I should change to get it so that audio works the whole time for the TV speakers?

Thanks!

Great. Enjoy your videos.

Open your Sound preferences, choose Output tab. See if you have a sound device you need to select.

What model of adaptor are you using? Also see:

Thanks! Figured it out through the Output tab, instead of just the sound effects tab as I was doing it before!, not sure how I change your answer to Correct, after doing Helpful?  Maybe follow up and I'll give you the correct answer credit?

I had this problem too. I have a Windows Laptop, and have a monitor plugged in, and I have my external speakers run through the monitor's headphone jack, making it easier to switch from my built in speakers to my external speakers. When I play music, even with Window settings sending audio through HDMI, iTunes keeps using my built in speakers. And yes, my HDMI audio is set as the default audio device. This problem is within the iTunes program, and not a problem with my PC/Hardware.
