account for sending new messages in Mail

In Mail Preferences, I have been using "automatically select best account" as the choice for which account new messages would be addressed from, but I've discovered it's not very good at making that selection. Previously, I thought that if I had a particular Inbox selected and clicked on Compose New Message, that new message would automatically be addressed from that account. That behavior no longer appears to work. Has that been a change made in the OS? My wife and I share the same computer, so now we have to be really careful that we're not addressing mail from the incorrect sender.
