Extension conversion issues on Sierra

I'm trying to change ~1400 .pages documents to .docx or .pdf. I'm doing this through Finder- either by renaming the file with the preferred extension or by going through Get Info and changing the extension.

Some files change; they open up with no error message, no problem.

Some files won't open as .docx or .pdf at all. I have to open the file in Pages and export. Doing it this way will take FOREVER!

What gives?!

If you change the extension the actual file format does not change, you have the same file, which (unless it really is a docx file to start with) will now have the wrong extension.

Thanks for the reply, Csound1. But how come some of the files WILL change using the Finder method and easily open in Preview (if I changed .pages to .pdf, let's say), but others give me an error message?

I am aware that there is an easy way to convert a large batch of files (by selecting the files and right-clicking to find the "Rename items" option, etc.) - some work, some don't!

Grr!!!

Extensions are not formats, putting a docx extension on another type of file will not make it a docx file. Preview can open many types of file, even when they have the wrong extension.

Ah. Shoot. So this means I'm going to have to go into each individual .pages file to convert it to .docx? OY!

Not necessarily, there is a method to perform batch conversion (using automator) but I don't know how. Wait for someone better informed to show up.

In future why tie yourself to .pages files, nothing other than Pages can open them, export them as docx or pdf files first.
