Time Machine freezes my laptop

If I set the Time Machine to 'Back Up Automatically' my laptop freezes with a spinning wheel. This can go on for 10 minutes, or more. Quite useless.

Backing Up manually works fine, as long as I don't want to use the laptop when it's happening. I try to remember to do it before going to bed. It usually takes a few hours that way.

Does anyone have a solution to this?
