How do I get documents and Desktop data out of ...
After upgrading to Sierra all my data (documents and desktop) were transferred to Icloud. I absolutely not want all my data being on someone else's server plus costing me money. How do I get all my data safely back onto my Mac without losing anything? I am totally p.. o.. that decisions of that importance are done with one click (or even without??). Preferably, I don't want to export every single file (thousands...) by hand, but just change the stuff back to where it was before.
Thanks in advance!
Copy all the files from iCloud Drive to your Desktop. Then turn off iCloud Drive syncing. Put the files back in the appropriate folder.
Are the documents also in your iCloud Drive folder on your Mac.
Just turn off iCloud Drive in iCloud preferences.
Then go icloud.com and sign in and delete you iCloud Drive files.
8. How to disable iCloud Drive?
To disable iCloud Drive on your iOS device, go to Settings > iCloud > iCloud Drive, and on your Mac, go to Apple menu > System Preferences > iCloud. if you disable iCloud Drive, then you will be managing your files locally, the documents will not be synced or updated to your other iOS devices with iOS 8 or OS X Yosemite, or on iCloud.com.

Thank you, but what makes me extremely wary to do this, is the following warning. Unfortunately, it's in German. It says, "If you deactivate iCloud Drive, all documents that are saved in iCloud, will be erased from this Mac."
And this is exactly, what I fear and don't want. I don't dare ignore this warning... But, there is an option "save a copy". If that meant the "copy" is on my Mac, I'd be ok. It just feels weird, that Apple takes my data, and then allows me to keep "a copy". And maybe I got it all wrong and the copy is on iCloud. Why can't they just speak like normal people???
Or is this a German thing?
Any more help or ideas how to interprete this cryptic message?? I cannot believe that I'm the only one with that problem!

I was looking for a way to do this, as I have some documents from work that I'm not permitted to store in any kind of cloud storage. Thank you for posting this solution!
You are welcome.
Thank you very much! I did deactivate iCloud Drive, but I found that I deactivated ALL of my iCloud with that. Probably, also my photostream? I just wanted to keep my Mac from uploading private documents and my whole desktop into Apple's cloud. Is it true that it's an all-or-nothing option? If you want the photostream, you must use the other (and clutter up expensive storage?
Please tell me, I got it all wrong, and deactivated more than necessary.
Just where/how did you deactivate iCloud drive?
I did it like on your picture. I just panicked because the actualisation took ages this time. I tested it with calendar, notes and photostream. Probably, just an unlucky coincidence of super slow internet. Very unusual, though.
But, still after I inactivated it in the settings, all my desktop data where gone. I copied all my document folder, but for a test for the desktop I relied on the announcement in the settings, my data would be copied... Just found my desktop empty, didn't want to take any risks, so I activated iDrive again, and now my second Iphone couldn't get backed-up because of lack of storage. I'm greeted this morning with the offer to buy new storage space!!
Sorry, but this is really impossible. How dare Apple meddle with my personal data? Make it difficult for me to retrieve it?? If they want to offer it, fine. But, explain to others than nerds, where the data stays on the computer, so that it doesn't take hours to reset the whole thing. I only upgraded to Sierra, I didn't want to give away all my data!! And, coming from Windows years ago, all my written data is organized under Documents, so it's HUGE. And important... I understand there is a file called iDrive archive, but why t.. f... not just put it back where you took it from, Apple after iCloud Drive is deactivated??
And yes, I do appreciate all your personal efforts!! In fact, they are very valuable! I am just so angered by the whole unnecessarily wasted time (I do not have!). In fact, I'm so angered by what I think is unnecessary complication to make people buy more storage space, looks like just a cheap trick to me. Or the usual, the computer guys cannot understand why normal people are so dumb and don't get it. I'm a vet, I could set my clients up in a 1000 ways on my territory, I don't...
Thanks in advance!
Hi Eric,
I did what you suggested by copying all the files to the desktop but I didn't realize my desktop was also on iCloud. I ended up with a mess. I then turned off iCloud and when prompted clicked on the "keep a copy of documents" thinking this would keep everything. Then I turned off iCloud. Now, I have all of the folders but none of the documents in them. I think all of my documents are in "all my files" in the favorites tab which is not on iCloud but I now have to recreate off the folders. I never intended my documents to be only in the cloud. I thought iCloud was just a backup. Very frustrated.
Dear Eric,
At the moment I have a rather big issue. The files are not back on my computer. They are gone. Not in the iCloud and not in the mac.
As all of your other comments in this issue I am very amused. By luck I have a back up but where are the files?
