High usage on app memory in activity monitor

Hello,

I have a Macbook Pro 2012, with 16GB RAM and a Samsung 250 SSD running the newest version of MacOS(10.12.6).

While using my new SSD for a while, I notice that my memory used in the activity monitor for RAM, is always pretty high. Its usually around 9-10GB when I restart the computer which is strange since I have nothing open. An example of what it is currently:

- Memory Used: 10.42GB

- Cached Files: 4.62GB

- App Memory: 8.54GB

- Wired Memory: 1.90GB

I understand that cached files are from apps that are saving the cache, but my concern is the app memory and why it is so high. I do not have any high processes showing besides kernel_task at 1.43GB, then the next one is at 200MB. I could not find any information on this online. When I was using my HDD, I never really passed 5-6GB of RAM unless I was using a lot of programs.

Any suggestions? I am just concerned that when I do use bigger programs, it will not have enough ram since all of it is being used by App Memory.

macOS manages memory usage dynamically based on how much you have available and what is needed by apps. It will prioritize active apps needs over those in the background and reduce their memory footprint as needed for best performance.
