OS X software versions:

In need of major help!

 

My two MacBooks are majorly outdated. They have mostly been used for schoolwork and have been neglected. But now I would like to update them. What's the safest update that's compatible for each one?

 

Macbook One:

Model Name: MacBook

Model Identifier: MacBook5, 2

Processor: 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Memory: 2 GB 667 MHz DDRs SDRAM

It's the old white version macbook. Not sure what year it might be from, maybe 2006-2009? I purchased it around that time I think.

 

Macbook Two:

Model Name: Macbook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010)

Processor: 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7

Memory: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

 

 

If any more info is needed please let me know where I can find it on the mac. I'm

MacBook Two: High Sierra is the only available Mac App Store choice, if the machine currently has Mountain Lion (10.8.5) or later on it already. If the OS X installed version is older than Mountain Lion, then you will need to purchase a Mountain Lion download key for the Mac App Store thru the Apple Online Retail Store, and perform an intermediary OS X update. The key will come in an email, and can be applied in the Mac App Store to gain access to the Mountain Lion installer. Seriously consider upgrading the RAM on this machine to at least 8GB.

 

MacBook One.  menu : About This Mac. What model and year nomenclature is shown (e.g MacBook Early-2009)? If it is an early 2009 model, then it has 2x1GB memory by default, and maxes out at 6GB (1 4GB, 1 2GB). You can run Mountain Lion, or El Capitan on it, but not many simultaneous, or large applications — after you upgrade RAM.

 

If it is earlier than a Late-2008 model MacBook, then even Mountain Lion will not run on it, and either use it as is, or recycle it through Apple.

 

Note: When upgrading from an older release of OS X, you should consider what application versions are required by their vendors, and the printer/scanner driver availability before you leap. Some peripherals no longer have driver support for newer releases of OS X, or macOS. Personally, I would thoroughly remove any third-party applications that installed kernel extensions before any operating system update.

These people should download El Capitan instead. It’s easier to get and free.

The link you provided only prompts me with the message, "we could not complete your purchase," when I clicked the GET button for El Capitan. Can you point me to a working link? I reformatted and restored a recently acquired Mac air 2012 to its factory default settings (Mountain Lion 10.8.5) And planning to upgrade to the previously installed El Capitan (or High Sierra if possible). The only updates appearing in my purchases are iMovie and High Sierra. If I tried to click accept in iMovie, under purchases, It doesn't do anything. It says there "To receive future updates, the bundled application will be assigned to your Apple ID. A unique hardware identifier from your computer must be sent to Apple to verify eligibility." I already tried downloading High Sierra several times, only to get the message "try again."I am not entitled to online support since I don't originally own the Mac Air. It will cost you an arm and leg if you tried to get it fixed through so-called "Authorized Apple Service Centers" here in the Philippines. I tried different links (and fixes) discussed here that don't work. I could really use a download link sent to my email, for El Capitan, if that is not too much to ask, I am not really hopeful that High Sierra can be installed in this Mac Air, even if it passed hardware requirements. Since your computer meets the hardware requirements for High Sierra and shipped with Mountain Lion, neither that link nor any similar one will work for you.

Finally there's my educated answer, after digging through tons of solutions offered here. It's just planned obsolescence, that's all. Anyone care to buy a Mac Air Mid 2012 Corei7 256 GB SSD 8Gb of RAM Mountain Lion 10.8.5 for $100? A word of caution: While it says in this site that it passed Hardware/Software requirements, according to Niel, It can not be upgraded to El Capitan or High Sierra. That means you're pretty much stuck with Mountain Lion. Macs are for highly technical people, not even for intermediate users like us. Time to buy a Windows laptop and move on. Thanks Neil for the quick reply. It saved me a lot of trouble.
