Sending Midi files from Logic to sequencer

I am new to Logic and am having problems with midi files. I have gone to environment and created a multi instrument layer. I have chosen the ports on Fastlane USB and pasted to arrangement window. Everything looks fine but when I import a midi file 16 audio tracks are created in addition and nothing on the 16 tracks that I created are being used to send data to Roland XP80 via Motu Fastlane USB. I just need to get the files to play on the Roland. I am about to give up and crank up my old G4 to use Metro. I don't really want to do that. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
