iPod Shuffle is not playing in order with iTune...

I recently and very unfortunately updated iTunes to 12.7.0.166 (Windows). I have an older iPod Shuffle that I use exclusively for listening to audiobooks. Suddenly it will not play in order, but is jumping all over the place. I have the switch in "play in order" position (middle). This makes it useless, of course. Many other issues with this version of iTunes, but this is the worst. Any solutions?
