Songs not playing itunes 12.7.0.166 Windows 10

Hello,

I am using Itunes 12.7.0.166 on Windows 10.

When I hit play in iTunes, the song comes up in the window at the top, and I am seeing the "Pause" option instead of the "Play" option - however the song does not play, and the song time does not advance.

I keep my songs on an external hard drive - however when I move the song to my iPhone, it plays just fine there.

I'm trying to create new playlists; but I can't hear the song before I add it to my playlist.
