Having followed the directions on resetting the SMC on my MacBook Air that perpetually shuts itself off/on I now have a blinking folder with a question mark on it in the center of my screen HOW DO I RECOVER THE UNIT?
The blinking "?" means your Mac can't find a valid system to startup from.
Follow the directions in this Apple Support Topic:
