Does iTunes 12.7 back up my iPhone and iPad?

I have in read a couple of posts on this site that iTunes 12.7 will no longer back up my iOS devices to my MacBook Pro, as it not longer deals with Apps.

Please can anyone confirm whether this is true or not? I regularly plug in and back up my iPhone to my Mac (usually around weekly). On more than one occasion, this has allowed me to do complete wipe and restore of a glitched iOS device.

I do not use iCloud as a back up, due to its heroic unreliability. Are Apple now enforcing iCloud use for iOS backups?

A number of posters have suggested that iTunes 12.7 now only backs up the media (music, movies, books, etc.) on the iPhone / iPad, but NOT the apps. I'd be grateful of confirmation of this, if anyone really knows.
