Apple Pencil Firmware

With the recent iPad updates I was wondering if I will eventually need to update my Apple Pencil Firmware and if so, how would I update it?

Like most smart stylus makers, it is really NOT possible for users to update the software "firmware" inside of a device like the Apple Pencil or other third party smart, Bluetooth stylus.

More than likely, Apple will, at some point, offer a new, improved Apple Pencil 2nd generation that you will, probably, need to purchase to get any new functionalties and features.

Another smart stylus maker, Adonit, does this same thing. They make improvements to their smart stylii in the form of new models which you need to purchase to get more accurate and more precise functionality and new features.

Technology advances with newer, more capable devices.

That's the way it is.

If they do have or come out with any mechism to update current Pencils, Apple will publish instructions on how to do it on their web site (just as there are instructions on how to update iOS, OS X, Mac firmware, etc).

AApple Pencil updates happen when you plug the pencil into the iPad to charge. Not sure what the trigger is, but left long enough, if there's an update it does it.

Still think Apple is going to just replace 1st gen Apple Pencils with a new and improved 2nd gen model.

Just like they do with ALL of their products.

There is NOT going to be some sort of firmware/software update for the original Apple Pencil.

And Apple hasn't, yet,  introduced such a thing for any of their iDevice accesories, especially through using the Lightning connector.

I think somr of you wishful thinkers.

Apple is going to just introduce a gen 2 Apple Pencil.

The 1st gen version will still work with any current compatible iDevices, but if any new functionality is introduced in a 2nd gen Apple Pencil and users want this new functionality, users are going to have to purchase a new 2nd gen Apple Pencl.

Seems pretty obvious this is what is going to happen to me!

MichelPM, Interesting opinion and points in the face of other comments and posts in other forums.

Personally I have had a few firmware updates on my Apple Pencil instigated through the lightening port on my iPad.

Noted from firmware version 2.40 to 2.41 with the first noted firmware update and the latest 2.46 updated this morning.

MichelPM I suggest you base your comments on the facts rather than wild opinions, facts are helpful, wild opinions not so much.

Will have to see what transpires from Apple with the Pencil at some later date.

I'm betting Apple Pencil 2nd gen.

Stating the blind obvious. Like any company is going to release a product and. It upgrade it, software or hardware. Hasn't been one so far and a little rich to expect anything different from Apple. If you don't like Apple so much why even bother commenting on their forum :D

I like Apple fine.

I am replying to you on my iPad Pro, myself.

I am a regular contributor to these forums.

Apple's MO is to update and release new product each and every year.

The Apple Watch is already on its 2nd iteration.

This IS around the time that Apple should refresh the entire iPad lineup.

They JUST introduced the new 2017, straight up 9.7 inch screen iPad 5 model!

I would NOT be surprised to see a 2nd gen Apple Pencil, in additon to new iPad models.

The 1st gen Apple Pencil is nearly 18 months old, now.

It is NOT unreasonable to assume that a new, improved Apple Pencil could be in Apple's pipeline.

Personally, I think the Apple Pencil needs some design updates, anyhow.

I never liked the Apple Pencil in its current incarnation.

So, I highly welcome a generation 2 Apple Pencil.

Just because you don't like my response doesn't mean it can't happen.

The current Apple Pencil is 02.46. If there's future update, the way you update the firmware is by connecting/plugging the Pencil to the iPad Pro, and let it sit for several minutes. The update is in the background (you won't get prompted).

It is possible for user to update the firmware, the statement of "NOT possible for users to update the software 'firmware' inside of a device like the Apple Pencil..." is just simply not true.

I own iPad Pro 12.9 and the Pencil, and that is how I updated mine, by connecting the Pencil to the iPad Pro.

This reply is simply incorrect:

Anything that has firmware in it can be update when connected to the correct computing device, be it a computer or a tablet...

Yes,

Someone here or another similar post informed me as such.

Thank you.
