AppleID troubleshoot

An old iPad of mine that I never signed into my appleid was suddenly prompting me for my appleid password and it had my iMessages synced and new apps (now is my 3 year olds) Would updating my new iPad or phone that are signed in and synced somehow upload Icloud and iMessages if it was never signed in??
