unable to send mail to hotmail smtp

Have a brand new Macbook Pro Retina and followed the set up for my hotmail account the SMTP that automatically configures is "smtp-mail.outlook.com" but this does not work. Receiving mail is fine..

Initial message reads Connections to the server “smtp-mail.outlook.com” on the default ports timed out.

I have tried the connection doctor that does not resolve the problem.

Help please as I am very new (3 days) to the world of mac and totally hacked off.

Hi Bob,

From your post I see you're having an issue with your SMTP server timing out.  When you used Mail Connection Doctor, what did you see?  There are troubleshooting steps for Mail according to what you see in the Connection Doctor in the article linked to below.

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

I have the same problem as the original poster above. Using a MacBook 2016 with Sierra. Can receive mail but can't send mail (says it can't connect to SMTP). I've tried checking the server settings but nothing helps and the FAQ also don't help. Getting really frustrated as I can see online that lots of people seem to have had this issue over the years but there is no clear response as to how to fix. No issue with this account on my iPad/iphone in the past just on the MacBook using the mail app
