iTunes Re
I'd really appreciate community support as I've already exhausted every suggestion I could find offered here.
ISSUE: Every time I connect my iPhone with iTunes, all of my local media re-syncs. I've got 1,000's of songs on my iPhone, so this takes forever anytime I want to add/remove/update a playlist or song.
WHEN THE PROBLEM STARTED: I used to have my iTunes folder on an external USB drive that I only connected when I wanted to update my iTunes library. I rarely updated my iPhone, but when I did I'm sure it would only update media that had been added/removed, had its metadata changed and or if I updated/added/removed playlists. This usually took no time, as I'd rarely add, remove or edit more than 100 songs at a time.
Having my iTunes media library on my internal HDD isn't an option because of capacity issues and upgrading my internal 500gb SSD isn't affordable. So, I bought and installed a Transcend JetDrive Lite 330 Expansion 256gb card/drive about a month ago. If you don't know what this is, it's a flash memory card that fits flush into the SD card slot. The JetDrive can be ejected and pulled out if necessary, but I haven't had the need. It appears like all other attached media and seems to be working great.
I uninstalled my up-to-date version of iTunes, downloaded and installed the current version before creating a new iTunes folder (and library) on the JetDrive. I then copied all of my media into the "Automatically add to iTunes" folder. "Keep iTunes media folder organized" is enabled.
After I connected the iPhone for the first time with the new iTunes library, within "Music Settings" I enabled "Sync Music" and "Selected playlists, artists, albums and genres." I selected the playlists I wanted to sync and those playlists contained songs which updated the space graph at the base of the screen. iTunes synced what I wanted. Everything OK so far.
PROBLEM
I made some changes to metadata on a few songs and created some more playlists. After I re-connected and synced I realized iTunes was syncing every song on every playlist I had originally selected for the initial sync, not just the songs and/or playlists I updated.
After finishing sync, I made no changes and pressed "Sync" again. Once again, the entire library re-syncs.
I rarely watch the media sync because it takes a couple hours. If the computer sleeps, the 'transferring wheel' keeps spinning on my iPhone. Once it stops, I'll disconnect the cable from the iTunes.
Sometimes, after the transfer has (I assume) completed (transfer wheel no longer spinning on iPhone), when I open the "Music" app on my iPhone, my media is gone; no songs at all after a 2 or 3 hour transfer.
Other weird stuff that's happening include some songs not being synced without warning, and playlist song order are occasionally different on iTunes compared to what ends up on my iPhone.
WHAT I'VE TRIED
- I restored my iPhone using iTunes and synced. After initial sync, problem re-occured on subsequent syncs.
- I "completely" uninstalled iTunes. I moved the almost new library file out of the iTunes folder. After reinstalling I pointed it to the folder I created on the JetDrive and iTunes created a new library file. After closing iTunes, I replaced the new library file with the one I had just moved out of the iTunes folder. iTunes library appeared to be working normally. After initial sync, problem re-occured on subsequent syncs.
- I successfully synced after enabling "Sync with this iPhone over Wi-Fi." After initial sync, problem re-occured on subsequent syncs.
- I have toggled on/off "Automatically sync when this iPhone is connected." After initial sync, problem re-occured on subsequent syncs.
- I've swapped Lightning to USB cables. After initial sync, problem re-occured on subsequent syncs.
I've been exclusively using iTunes located on external hard drives since 2nd generation iPod's were a thing, and have never had any of these issues before.
Thank you so much in advance for any support anyone can suggest.
