Heaphones/internal speakers issue

I have one of the new Macbooks, and I'm using an auxiliary monitor (plugging into it using HDMI into an USB C adapter). Because the monitor has no speakers, I'd like to use the laptop's internal speakers or headphones, but when I arrange either one in the "Sound" settings (I can click "internal speakers," or "headphones" if they're plugged in), I'm still unable to get any output. I've turned the volume all the way up and down again, still no luck. Any help is much appreciated!

Hi,

Go to Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup > see if you can select the internal speakers and the volume is up and Mute is not checked.

Alas, that didn't work. The "Master" volume in that menu appears all the way down and non-adjustable (gray and not clickable). The two channels listed below the master volume go up and down accordingly as I change the volume, but still no sound.

I wonder if it has something to do with the audio already being sent through the adapter to HDMI, even though the monitor doesn't have speakers? Just a thought. If that was so, I wouldn't think speakers or headphones would be an option in Sound....
