Mac Mini Server Drive Failure

Our Mac Mini Server has failed and I want to confirm with others the appropriate steps to take.

  • System boots but gets stuck during RAID rebuilding process.
  • I cannot tell from Disk Utility which physical drive inside is the problem (since there are two)
  • Attempted booting server in target mode so I could make a temporary clone to an external drive using Carbon Copy Cloner, but after a certain point the server ejects itself and a READ error happens.  This happens every time.
  • Attempted to remove one drive and place in a drive dock to see if it would mount on another computer (see image below).  No go.  That drive is listed as Failed in the status section of Disk Utility.  Second drive not tested yet.

So what is the point of the mirrored RAID?  I suppose the reason the server still boots at all is because of the mirrored working drive, but the server eventually hangs in the RAID rebuilding process which never goes anywhere.  Mac Mini Server ends up just getting incredibly hot.

Any thoughts folks?  I ordered two new drives, but I am trying to figure out how to get the data cloned first.
