HTML5 video freezes with Thunderbolt display

Not all the time, but pretty frequently, HTML5 videos (from YouTube, Twitter or other sources) fail to play on my Thunderbolt connected display whenever I'm using Thunderbolt to carry the audio to my external speakers. If I switch to the headset audio, the videos play. But if I switch back to the audio output on my Dell monitor, the video freezes again. Why?
