locked out of ipad after software update

i updated to IOS 11.0.1 on my phone and 2 ipads.  My phone and the one ipad are fine, they restarted with no trouble, didn't ask for any codes to restart.  the other ipad is asking me for a passcode to unlock the ipad. I never created one during the software update. I have tried every previous password ive ever used to no avail. at this point I keep getting 'disabled' over and over again and have to wait an hour at a time before trying again. What is it asking me for ?? its not the typical 4 or 6 digit screen. This is a large text box.  ive never seen this before.
