How do I find old events on my Calendar?

I have several years worth of events in my calendar. iOS seems utterly incapible of doing a basic search system-wide to find content that's older than, apparently, one year.

Today I got a jury duty notice, and I tried to search for the last time I had jury duty. iOS tells me there's no occurance of "jury" in my device. This is 200% BS. I went to my old Palm Z22, did the same search, and got four hits. When I manually hunted for them on my iPod Touch, I found them.

How do I find old events in iOS? Apparently Apple hasn't bothered to make this possible. Anyone know of any 3rd-party apps that correct this seeming oversight?

Did you try to increase the number of days in info pane/Calendars/ -> don't sync events older the xxxx days?

Compare your calendar on your computer and ipod, the one on the computer will still have all events, that are older than the number of days that is selected in the info pane/calendar section.

Deselecting the day option should sync all events ever mentioned on your computer's calendar to your ipod.

I just removed the selection of the days, synced after that and now I have all the events from "way way back when" on my phone as well. So, it's possible without any other apps.

Thanks Ingo, but you misunderstood the problem. My iPod Touch already has my entire calendar, going all the way back to the early 2000s. Within the Calendar on my iPod I can go to, say, December 25, 2005, and look at events from that Christmas, for example, in an attached note on that date, I have a list of all the Xmas gifts given and received that Xmas.

But if I search the iPod for the name of one of those gifts, using either the Homepage search or the search within Calendar, nothing is found. As near as I can tell, this is because Apple apparently hasn't bothered to make its search tools capible of searching events more than a year old.

Again, when I go to my old Palm and do the same search, I find exactly what I'm looking for. But in iOS, this search is impossible. You have to go date-by-date to find anything in the calendar more than 1 year old.

So I'm looking for a solution — either an app that someone created to bridge this oversight, or something I've overlooked in the OS.

have u tried using the left arrow on the ipod calendar?

Kevin, I'm not sure what you mean. Do you mean the left arrow in the Week or Month view?

Correct, the events are there, but the search function does not seem to cover events older than one year.

Yes, I have told Apple about it. Appauling (deliberate?) oversight.

So do you know of any third-party apps that can fill the gap left by Apple? From what I've read, it looks like Apple's made it impossible for a 3rd party app to search system-wide. But I'm hoping I'm wrong.

Let's wait and see what iOS5 can do about that.

Yeah, I was kinda thinking the same thing. But I'm not getting my hopes up. Apple philosophy often seems to be "Don't worry your pretty little head about that. If we didn't include it, you don't really need it."

Which is kind of true, at least for me, I can't remember when I used spotlight to search for entries older than one year.

But I might have workaround. I just tried to find events older than a year using iCal on my Mac, and I had no problem finding what I was looking for.

So maybe this would be a solution until we know more about iOS5.

when u open the calendar al the bottom u will see tabs with today,  list,  day,  month click on month and at the top next to the month ur on u should see arrows for left and right, click the left tab to go back months to where u have added events

Yes, I've had to resort to using iCal to find older events. That's a workaround, but of course, it doesn't do me any good when I'm not at my Mac. I use my iPod for everything calendar-related, and only open iCal when I need to do something that Apple hasn't bothered to make possible in iOS — usually basic things my 10-year-old Palm did just fine, like the problem at hand, and setting an alarm for 12 hours before an event, or 5 hours before an event, or 3 hours before an event, or at any other interval that Apple hasn't hard-wired into the Calendar on iOS (instead of simply offering an "Other..." option). I'll be interested to see if Apple allows users better flexibility and access to their own data in iOS 5.

I don't think you read my issue clearly. Your method does no good when trying to find old events for which you don't already know the date. My question to my iPod calendar is this: "When was the last time I had jury duty?" I have at least four or five events in my Calendar with "jury duty" in the name from years past. It is impossible to find these events in iOS. Nor can I find, say, which Xmas was the year my sister gave me a blender. Each Xmas, I attach a note to an event on Dec. 25 that lists all the gifts given and received. On my Palm, all I had to do was search the device for the word "blender," and up it pops: December 25, 2004. This is impossible in iOS. Instead, I have to go to each Dec. 25, open the note, and read it manually, looking for the word "blender" myself, because iOS doesn't bother looking at events more than a year old.

if you click on list this should list all calendars on the ipod touch i tried itwith my 2nd gen ipod touch and its listing all events back to 2005 where my first event was entered, it works on mine but hopefully the ios 5 will fix this and let you type in words to find them

Hmmm. That's a thought. It would involve a lot of scrolling! But when I use List view, I can only scroll back ~13 months, to September 18, 2010.

I went to Settings > Calendars > Sync and changed the setting to "All Events," then synced again, and that got me further back, but only in one calendar — my google calendar for work.

The events on all my local calendars still only go back to Sept. 18, 2010 in List View.
