Can I use mini display port to connect video be...

Hi, I want to connect my new Macbook Air to my 2013 iMac, both of which support thunderbolt. I just want to use the iMac as a 2nd monitor.

The thing is, I can find a mini display port cable on Amazon for $10, but TB is like $50.

So, can I use a mini display port to send the video, or does it have to be a Thunderbolt cable?

I can't find the answer online—I've even found various diagrams showing configurations that work, but this configuration is not shown.

Thanks!

No' you need a Thunderbolt cable to use your 2013 iMac as a display in Target Display Mode.
