OS: Sierra. Mail will not allow two SMTP accounts,

OS: Sierra. I have two IMAP/SMTP email accounts (one of which is gmail). Mail allows use of two IMAP accounts but not two SMTP accounts. I can therefore not send mail from my second account. Solution?

SMTP applies to outbound e-mail and IMAP applies to inbound e-mail - all outbound mail is SMTP.

So not quite sure what you're meaning when you say two SMTP accounts don't work.

Do the two accounts have different SMTP servers or do you have two accounts on the same SMTP server? What does the Activity window and Connection Doctor window show when you try the second non-working account and also on the working account? You can show these windows in Mail by clicking on the Window menu command and then selecting both of these items (Activity and Connection Doctor).

Don't give your real e-mail address but you can reveal the SMTP server name without worry.

Did this ever work since you've installed Sierra or is it something new? Did it originally work in your first Sierra install and maybe stopped working with one of the updates to Sierra?

Good luck...

Sierra allows as many SMTP server connections as you want, there are no limits.

Your Mac is not working correctly if it won't allow it.

Thank you. I have an outgoing gmail account- SMTP.gmail.com and another account smtp.your-site.com. Mail on this brand new computer (but not on an older computer) only allows me to use one outgoing SMTP account. It prevents me from setting the gmail account to one outgoing SMTP account and setting my your-site account to its SMTP account. Thus all outgoing mail can only go from one SMTP account..

If you can identify the non working smpt account, could you compare it's settings with those on your "working" older machine!

This support article lists what to look for with respect to smtp Mail for Mac: Outgoing server settings

and this might help in finding where those settings are located.

So just to make certain where you currently are:

Do you actually have two accounts set up or are having trouble setting up the second account? If you do have two accounts set up, what are the settings listed in the Server Settings tab for the two or for the first one if you only have one so far? Also what option did you choose to create the first one and the second one (there are 6 options when you create a new account - iCloud, Exchange, Google, Yahoo, AOL, other)?

I enter all the settings exactly as they should be (and have done son for years). But after i have entered the settings for the gmail SMTP account on this new computer then I enter the correct settings for the other account but they are automatically changed to the gmail account and vice versa. I can only have one SMTP account.

I did everything absolutely correctly. I have the two accounts and both work separately for incoming mail. But I can only have one outgoing account. Thank you for all the help.

Do you see the two e-mail accounts if you go to Mail->Preferences->Accounts?

You can associate the appropriate SMTP server to each account y clicking on the account on the left pane, selecting server settings; then under SMTP choose one of the servers on the list or add a new one (see image below).

Please tell us in detail what in the above procedure is failing for you.

I have done all of this- but, as I say on this new computer, I am only allowed one SMTP account. If I enter the settings for the other account it defaults back to the first one.  I am not a newcomer to setting up accounts and have set up accounts successfully for years on Apple (and indeed Windows).

So if you choose Edit Server List, press + to create a new server, etc., does it fail, or creates it but doesn't stick?

Maybe there is a corrupt cache or preference file. You could try restarting in Safe Mode, and then again normally.

I am not inferring that you have put in the wrong settings, it's just from experience I've found that Sierra Mail can get a little mixed up between accounts sometimes. I've noticed if editing settings in my POP account and following save, my iCloud account may not work and on investigation I've discovered it's outgoing mail account has gone from iCloud to none (and these issues always seem to be on the smtp side).

If no matter what you try fails to allow the correct choice of smtp for each account I would start again - backup any mail  if required and delete the two troublesome accounts then re add them. I'm not sure just removing the two smtp's from the smtp server list will do the trick but you could try that first.

Same problem here! I have 5 mail accounts. 3 accounts has the same smtp settings but inside different settings for each mail account, except 2. These 2 accounts works fine but those with the same smtp server settings (checked also the smtp server list for each) are not working properly. For instance it is not possible to send mails from the selected account. Mail app just selects the first account wich is in the list and sends my mail from this "standard" account. Also in the settings since Sierra its not possible to choose "send from selected account". there is only a field what is saying "automatically send from BEST account" <--translated from german

Don't know what to do here....
