Screen sharing

I'm a writer in a writing partnership. I want to be able to view and control my partner's screen but not take control away from them. We had been using the built-in screen sharing function, which was perfect. But this only works if the two computers are on the same network? And that isn't possible now.

Does anyone know of an alternative?
