antivirus/malware popups help!

I have a Macbook Pro mid-2012 running OSX- mountain lion. I keep getting annoying popups for MacKeeper, Norton and Mcafee. It usually starts as piet2eix3l.com and the tab is re-directed to one of the 3 sites. I don't see anything in extensions, applications or plugins that are out of the ordinary. Does anybody know what this is and how it can be stopped/removed? Should I download software like Malwarebytes?

Malwarebytes is a good place to start, yes.

So I suppose an update to Sierra is in order then? I've heard that this can slow down some older MacBook Pros.

Shouldn't need to update to run Malwarebytes. Most opinions are that you don't need to remove it once you scan / get rid of any malware, as it doesn't use resources if not running. The free edition may not have a real-time scanner function anyway, only the purchased? Not sure, but you can investigate that aspect.

...or rather the trial edition...
