Forgot my macbook password, took out hard drive...

I have a Macbook Pro running OSX 10.11.3 and forgot the password to it. I wanted to back up and retrieve the data inside so I opened up the computer and took out the hard drive (this is an older Macbook that allows you to pull out the hard drive directly).

Then, I plugged the hard drive into an external enclosure and it looks like I am able to read the data inside. I was wondering if there were certain parts of the hard drive I am blocked from seeing and what the best way to back up the data would be?

Ideally, a time machine backup would be the nicest, but would clicking and dragging all the contents work? What about creating a DMG file from the contents?

Use Time Machine, or the Image function in the Disk Utility, or a product such as Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper.

What is the difference between CCC/SD and Disk Utility? How can I use Time Machine if all I have is access to the hard drive (i.e., read from an external enclosure)?
