Partition external hard drive already in use.

I just got a Lacie Rugged Mini 1TB external USB 3 hard drive.

I formatted it to exfat but did not partition the drive.

I have an old windows laptop and a new(ish) MacBook Pro 2015 15' version.

I am saving content from my old laptop to it. But I then also want to use it for the MacBook Pro. I just messed up and did not partition the drive. So my question:

Can I partition the drive now or do I need to reformat it somehow and start again. I did attempt this but the option to partition on the Mac was not available once I had formatted the external drive.

If I just continue now is that risky. I will be mostly just transferring music files, wavs and midi files and maybe some other stuff.

I am using OS Sierra 10.12.6.

You already have your answer; you cannot partition on the Mac. Start over by connecting it to the Mac > Disk Utility > select HD > Erase/Format > Mac OS Extended (Journaled) GUID > Partition > select partition sizes > format one as ExFAT and leave the other as Mac.
