Mac OS X Cannot Read EXT4 Filesystem

Hello everybody,

I purchased a Mac Mini about two weeks ago, and I am still trying to transfer my files from my old computer to the Mac.  I used Linux on my old computer, and it used the ext4 filesystem.  When I plug this hard drive into the Mac, it tells me that it cannot read the drive and offers to format it for me.

I called Apple support and spoke with a technician and senior technician, and neither of them had heard of ext4.  I am only aware of two options:

1. Install software that allows Mac OS to mount and read ext4, or

2. Use virtualization software (like Parallels or VMWare), install Linux, and transfer my files through Linux.

Both options cost money, which I would like to avoid since I am only trying to transfer my files one time to the Mac.  Apple "Care" would allow me to purchase Parallels for $80, but after two hours on the phone with five people who had never heard of ext4, they would not offer so much as a discount.

If anyone has any ideas to help me, I would be very appreciative!

VirtualBox is a free virtual machine app.

The commercial solution to letting a Mac read and write an Ext4 filesystem is https://www.paragon-software.com/home/extfs-mac/

The free solution is as Illaass is suggesting to use OSXFuse which is the successor to MacFuse, MacFuse has not been supported and updated for a long time.

Another option is to install VirtualBox on a Mac, build a Linux virtual machine using VirtualBox and then one can use the 'shared folder' function in Virtualbox to transfer files via the Linux virtual machine.

I just bought a mac mini.  I knew I would be facing this challenge; however, there is light at the end of the tunnel if you've used Linux for sometime.  Since I still have my old computer loaded with Ubuntu, I've  installed Samba to move files between the Linux box and OS X.  There are tons of articles and support on how to install Samba.  I hope this helps.
