hi,
my hard disk is almost full and I would like to know if the 'omniharddisk sweeper' is safe to use.
any other ideas to free up space are more than welcome.
thanks
Go step by step and check.
1. Start up in Safe Mode.

2. Backup your computer.
3. Empty Trash.

4. Disk space / Time Machine / Local Snapshots
Local backups
https://support.apple.com/kb/ht4878
5. Delete old iOS Devices Backup.
iTunes > Preferences > Devices
Highlight the old Backups , press “Delete Backup” and then “OK”.
https://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
6. Re-index Macintosh HD.
This will take a while. Wait until it is finished.
System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy
https://support.apple.com/kb/ht2409
7.Try OmniDiskSweeper. This will show the storage size details of the items.

Select Macintosh HD and click “Sweep Selected Drive” at the bottom.
Be careful. Delete only the files that can be safely deleted. If you are not sure about any file, don’t touch it.
8. Move iTunes, iPhoto and iMovie media folders to an external drive.
iTunes
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201562
iPhoto
https://support.apple.com/kb/PH2506
iMovie
https://support.apple.com/kb/ph2289
I have been using it for years with no issues. It is regularly recommended here on these Forums for exactly the issue you are facing.
Cheers
Pete

thank you so much for your reply.
Your reply was very helpful and with the omnidisksweeper I found some files I deleted already . There are some more files that take up quite some space but I am not quite sure if I can delete them.
For example :
5.3 GB lost and found - 5.3 GB Inode13603343 ? Any any idea what this is
1.7 GB printers includes epson, hp, canon, lexmark, brother, samsung but I only have hp and canon. Can I delete the other printers ?
I have 5 times adobe reader, 2 times google earth chrome, twice dropbox, adore reader installer and flash player several times. Can I keep only one and delete the rest.
thanks and have a nice day !

This file is usually a leftover from installing OS X.
Backup your computer.
Move that file to trash.
See if that works without any problem.
Flash Player has to be uninstalled and a fresh copy has to be installed.
Uninstall Adobe Flash Player:
https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-mac-os.html
Reinstall Adobe Flash Player.
https://get3.adobe.com/flashplayer/update/osx/
Removing Adobe Reader
Macintosh HD > Library > Internet Plug-ins
Look for these two files.
AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin
AdobePDFViewer.plugin
Right click those and select “Move To Trash”.
Extra copies of other application files can be moved to trash.
Make sure that there is no problem after that. Empty the trash.
Yes Omni disksweeper 100 persent safe.
Just dont delete any important files!
you can delete all the unnecessary folders using a program called Grandprespective
