Encrypted hard drive from another Mac

Hi guys, I'm helping a friend of mine fixing his MacBook Pro.

The basic problem is a folder with a question point on a white screen when you start the laptop.

So my idea was to connect the hard drive to my MacBook, copying all his data and reinstalling the latest version of the OS.

Here's the second problem: he bought this laptop from a website few days ago, it is not new and the hard drive is encrypted; so when I try to connect the hard drive to my laptop it keeps asking me a password, even if I want to use it as startup disk.

So what can we do?

Thanks!

It sounds like it may be a firmware password. Here is some information if you have forgotten your password. https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT203409

Hi,

Use Recovery or Internet Recovery Mode to install a new OS on an unencrypted HD: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201314

The reason encryption exists is to prevent people from trying to do what you're doing. You'll need to get the password or use a different HD.
