How far in time can we safely delete Time Machi...

No matter what, I have never enough space for my large photography files and docs. I recently managed my drives and eliminated tonnes of stuff. However, my external 1TB "Time machine" drive indicates that it is on the point of no return. That is unless I put it on a serious diet. Given we've had quite a few OS updates lately, how far in time can I safely delete specific date folders? For instance, can my time machine folders from early 2016 but deleted and is it safe to delete up to August 2017?
