I just bought this Mac today, and I have been trying to drag-and-drop folders all over the desktop, from finder window to finder window. No joy. Can anyone help me? Of course, I did not check this while I was at the Apple Store.

How do you do it?

Trackpad:

move the mouse pointer on the file you want to drag,

then with a finger of your other hand press and hold  the point closest to you on the trackpad (it "clicks"),

and then with the mouse pointer drag the file.

The usual problem people face when first using a Force Touch Trackpad is pressing too hard and clicking a selected item, thereby de-selecting others. Might that be the problem?

Select the icon and drag. Don't press the trackpad. You can adjust the trackpad's sensitivity or turn off Force Click entirely in System Preferences.
