TextEdit font size after inserting a picture

I love Apple's TextEdit.  It does everything I need it to do to create either plain text docs or text docs with pictures inserted here or there (rtfd).  Just one long standing complaint.  I have my version set to fairly large text, Helvetica, Regular, size 18. 

So I go along typing text and all is good.  Then I go grab a screenshot of something I want to include, drag that in where I want it and then hit return to continue entering text.  However, it ALWAYS then changes the text size after that picture insertion to Helvetica, Regular, size 12 which is too small. 

In Preferences, I have Font Sizes for BOTH "plain" and "rich text" set to Helvetica, Size 18.  But every time I drag in a picture, the font switches for the next line to size 12. 

Either I fix it right there on the spot or sometimes I wait until I am done, do a "Select ALL" on the text and then change the size everywhere back to size 18.  But is there some other preference I am missing that could do away with this constant change to size 12 following the insertion of a picture???  Or maybe it's a bug??? 

Anyway, does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions???  thanks
