On my MBP, 2011, menu bar in recovery mode offers only one option - Language Chooser. How do I access Terminal? Is something missing?

If you created a SDcard or USB bootable installer. Try booting off that and run Terminal in that environment.

You have to choose your language first to proceed.

From there, Terminal will be in the dropdown menu Utilities>Terminal

Thank you, leroydouglas, but I have moved past this step. I am not new to mac. The menu bar seems to be stuck. Is this a bug or must I reinstall Sierra?

Try Internet Recovery  (option command R)

leroydouglas, again, I thank you for your attention! Here is summary of my steps:

I reboot into recovery mode using the Command + R option you mentioned.

The first screen is, as you say, a language chooser - I select the first option, English, and click the arrow to proceed.

The NEXT screen, the one where the menu bar SHOULD display the option to access the terminal STILL ONLY DISPLAYS the words, Language Chooser.

The menu bar is "stuck".

Question - is this a Sierra bug OR is there something wrong on my own system which might necessitate a reinstall of Sierra. I did NOT do a clean install of macOS. Thanks.

I am having this exact same issue.  I thought it a problem with my macbook (late 2011) so I reinstalled El Capitan and performed the upgrade again...same thing

I need the terminal in the recovery menu and no longer have.  I have "language chooser" and nothing happens when I select it.

Any ideas?

Hi, stranger0nfire. My issue finally went away on its own. I accessed the recovery mode multiple times since last evening, when I first downloaded and installed macOS Sierra. Each time the Language Chooser remained the only option in the menu bar - frustrating! Then, just about an hour ago, I tried yet again. The ONLY think I did differently upon reaching the menu screen with the 4 actionable choices, I paused for a few seconds longer until I was sure everything was loaded and then moved my cursor to the top of the screen where, PRESTO, the old familiar menu bar appeared, with Utilities drop-down folder. I was able to access the Terminal and all was well!

I have the same problem. I use a macbook 15 inch early 2011, however , I didn't have luck like you did. I waited 30 mins to ensure everything is loaded and the other menus still didn't show up. Tried reboot several times but still missed those menus.

Basically I can't use the internet recovery as I need the new terminal commands in later OS versions which is not offered by Lion terminal. Really hope someone could figure out some way to get around this.

So mine worked once this morning (I went into to disable csrutil so I could modify a few system files protected by "rootless").  I booted using command+r, saw the menu, chose terminal, made the changes and booted into Sierra.

After making the changes, I shutdown and do command+r and now can't get the menu back so I can re-enable csrutil.  All I'm getting now is "Language chooser" on the menu.  This is even after waiting in the restore menu for over a half hour.

This is very strange.  I can leave csrutil disabled (it doesn't cause the macbook to run badly), but I would like to re-enable the rootless feature but I no longer have the terminal menu.

This bug is very frustrating.   My terminal menu came up once and now it will not come back.  I hope an update is released which addresses this issue.  So far it only appears to be affecting the 2011 models.  I searched for hours to find this post.

Tell me about it! I haven't attempted to get back into the recovery mode screen - for me, no need. But it would appear you are correct in identifying the 2011 models as being the ones affected. My MBP is also an early 2011 model. All else is running fine, though. Well, had to replace Quicken Essentials with another option since it would not run on Sierra either. Still, can't complain after 5 years of worry-free computing. I am constantly reminded why I ditched the competition. I, too, hope that Apple id's this as a bug and offers a fix in their next update!

I'll give it a shot when I get home and post a reply.  This may be an optional work-around until an update can fix this bug for the 15" 2011 MacBook Pro

This is a viable work-around for my 15" late 2011 MacBook Pro.  I was able to test this
