Having trouble setting series 3 watch to unlock...

Had no problem with using my series 2 watch to unlock my Mac.  With my series 3 gps + cellular, my Mac keeps telling me I have to update the software, but I'm using Sierra.  Any resolutions to this?

When using an Apple Watch Series 3 model, Apple advises that the Auto Unlock feature requires your Mac to be running macOS High Sierra (rather than Sierra):
