When my files are in iCloud, can I delete them from my hard drive?  If so, how do I locate them in iCloud - they will no longer be searchable in Finder.

In general iCloud is not a backup and is not an archive - it is a syncing service - there are many different iCloud services and to be sure you get the correct answer you need to identify the specific service you are using
