10.6.8 how do I put Applications Folder back in...
My kids deleted the flyout menu for Applications typically found on the right side of the dock (when located at the bottom, I'm obviously not a pre-OSX user). It used to be just to the left of the Documents flyout. How can I get this irreplaceable feature back?
Thanks!
Dan
I'd like to add I've already tried to drag the App Folder from Finder down into the Dock as well as looking through system preferences. Thanks!
Did you drag it to the right side of the Dock (the Applications folder, that is?)
Kappy, yes I did try that. It doesn't give me the option to drop it there. Keep in mind I'm talking about the flyout menu where you just have to click once and the program opens and the menu goes away.
You need to click-on, hold, drag it to the dock, wait for a space to open up and then drop it onto your dock between the separator line and Trash in order for it to work as a Stack.
Have a look at > Mac Basics: The Dock
That is a setting for the stack. First, you have to drag the folder into the right side of the Dock and leave it there. Then CTRL- or RIGHT-click to set your preferences for it.
Thank you Den.thed, I am familiar with that. That's the problem. I cannot drop new icons into the doc. I tried it with programs and I cannot add them either. I know I have Admin priviledges because 1. Home Computer 2. No other User Accounts.
Is there a way to Lock the Dock? Could that have been turned on by the kids I wonder?
Kappy, thanks for the tip on Preferences for Dock items. Used that to tweak my Documents Stack. Now, how to get a Applications stack going...
Might be the immutable Dock setting, try this in Terminal then kill/force quit the Dock...
defaults write com.apple.dock contents-immutable -bool false
BDAqua, that may be great advice but it's a little above my pay grade. I don't know what Terminal refers to. I've never seen Dock show up in the Force Quit menu, and the last line reads in my head "..." but thank you for the effort.
Look in Applications folder for Terminal, double click on it, then copy that one line & paste it into Terminal & hit enter, reboot... any change?
Oh, is this an admin or managed accoubt?
No need to use terminal. I had the same problem. I couldn't drag the Applications icon/link/folder from the sidebar to the dock right next to the trash can.
Here how I did it.
1. Open a finder window (any folder will do)
2. Right click on the "Applications" link/icon and select "Open Enclosing Folder"
3. This opens another finder open which should show folder for Applications, Library, Developer, System etc.
4. Drag the Applications folder from this finder window (not sidebar) to the dock.
5. Do a happy dance,,,,,
BTW - i am running 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard), not sure if this applies to other version of OS X.
Big Fruit is notorious about changing shortcuts/gestures/methods from one version to another.
Happy dance is done! Thank you.
FYI I'm running 10.6.8
Dkutah, you are awesome! I had the same issue, suddenly my "application" bar disappeared from Dock... and voila!, I am now doing a happy dance, too. Thanks so much!!
I am also doing the Happy Dance!!
Thank you :-)
Hi Comradetexas,
They misunstood you. I had the same problem with you. What you really wannt to do is to put the Application back to the left side of the Dock.
Actually you all misunderstood the Icons in the left side of the Dock, the Application folder could not be put in the Dock. on the ocntrary, the Launchpad is the one you aim to.
Here you go:
• Navigate to Computer in Finder (Shift-Command-C)
• Open local hard drive (usually called "Macintosh HD" or computername)
• Open the Applications folder
• Locate Launchpad and drag it to the Dock
Enjoy to dance.
