itunes will not accept ipod

Hi,

I have connected my sons ipod touch to my computer and itunes pops up with the following error:

"The ipod cannot be used because it requires a newer version of itunes. Go to ...."

The ipod states it has the newest update with iOS 9.3.5 and that there is no update for itunes.

My computer is running Windows 7 with itunes version 12.1.2.27.

I had his ipod connected and working with this computer in June 2017. Why does it not work now??

I am very frustrated!!!!
