AFP & FTP data transfer speed.

I am using the MacMini(os v10.12.6) with ThunderLink(ATTO), and the transmission rate of AFP is more than twice as faster as FTP.(500MB/s vs 200MB/s)

In the past, I think FTP was faster than AFP.

Why is AFP much faster?  Is it related to Thunderbolt?
