Acer XR382CQK + MBP2017: windows move beyond ed...

I have a new 2016 Macbook Pro (MBP), purchased in May 2017, and a new Acer XR382CQK display. The display is great - except that when I plug it into the MBP after a period of using the MBP alone, some of the windows move out so far that most of the window is off the left-hand side of the screen.

I can fix this by (a) dragging each window back to the middle, or (b) closing and restarting the application(s) in question. Both of these solutions are annoying and should not be necessary. This behavior does not seem specific to any one application, though web browser windows are the most affected.

I'm using the USB-C cable supplied with the Acer display. OS is 10.12.6.
