Brand new Apple Pencil does not work! Is it a dud?

Just purchased Apple Pencil followed the instructions to the letter and simply won't be recognised or pair with iPad.

It can only pair with an iPad Pro. Is that what you have?

The Apple Pencil is only compatible with iPad PRO models.

If you have any other iPad, it will not work with it!

I have the Same problem. I use ipad pro 10.5. Not pairing,charging,reset of the ipad does not helP anything.
