I am trying to erase a USB drive I have and am doing it by going to Disk Utility, erase, and re-formatting as a OS X Extended (Journaled) format with a GUID Partition Map.

Whenever I try to put in a name for the re-format like "My Drive Number 2", it gives errors like:

Unmounting disk

Couldn’t open device.

Operation failed…

However, if I use "Untitled", it reformats without errors. What is causing this problem?

So use Untitled, format the drive, then rename it. What is the device's current format? Is it a Windows format?
