OS10.11.6 iMac occasionally beeps.

My iMac OS10.11.6 occasionally beeps, both while awake and asleep (but not during startup). This is a single soft beep, about every 45 minutes (but not consistently). It isn't affecting the performance of the computer.

I have spoken to Apple about this, but the tech suggested either that I erase the disk and then restore from my external drive (which tech didn't guarantee would work) or take it to an Apple Store. I'd like to know if there's a simpler solution.
