Macbook pro Touch ID stopped working on sierra ...

I have a macbook pro and upgraded to Sierra 10.12.6 recently.

After the upgrade, my touch id has stopped working. I tried to set it up again by adding a new fingerprint but I get the message Failed Unable to complete Touch ID setup. Any idea how this can be fixed ?

I had exactly the same problem. And deleting a fingerprint did not solve it.

However deleting all fingerprints (3 in my case) made the difference.

So adding fingerprints all over worked fine - and the great Touch ID is now working fine.

Did you remove the initial fingerprint before trying to create a new one?

Yes, I deleted the initial fingerprint and am not able to create a new one.

I'm having the same problem.  Deleting existing fingerprints and restarting did not help.

I'm having the same issue as well... I only had one fingerprint loaded, deleted it, but still getting the "Failed" error.  Also, the user login time is taking way to long, somewhere between 2.5 to 3 minutes after entering my user password, boot time is just fine though.  This all started after the 10.12.6 update.

Those steps fixed the issue on my side:

• Shutdown the mac (and make sure the screen is really off -- may take some time)
• Reset the SMC memory:
  • Using the built-in keyboard, press Shift-Control-Option on the left side of the keyboard, then press the power button at the same time.
  • Hold these keys and the power button for 10 seconds.
  • The Mac start by itself, or press the power button again if not.
• Open the Touch ID preference pane.
• Try to add a new fingerprint. It kinda glitched and did nothing.
• So I retry adding it and it worked!
