Hard drives stopped working and now working again

I have 2 external drives that stopped working, one is a portable drive and the other a full size drive, both had the same symptoms.  After ejecting themselves several times, often after only 10 to 20 seconds of use, both then were not recognized and I was asked if I wanted to initialize them. (I did not.)  I bought a new drive and got them to work long enough to transfer most of the data.  One stopped altogether so I tried using DataRescue 3 to recover the files and started to clone it.  But it only cloned 3.5 megs of the 2 TB drive.  Then all of a sudden the drive started working again and I was able to recover everything from it without it ejecting.  I then went back and tried the first drive that was giving me problems and it too is now working fine.  I did the repair routines in Disk Utility and Tech Tool Pro, the latter found several errors on one drive and fixed them but didn't find any errors on the 2nd drive.  I find it very peculiar that these 2 drives both stopped and then started working at the same time and wonder if the problem could be with my MacBook Pro?  I tried using both USB ports when the problems first started and it didn't make a difference.  The internal drive on my MBP is working fine.  Should I reformat the drives and hope for the best?  The portable drive has a lot of use but the full size drive doesn't get much use.  Just don't know how much I can trust them.
