Can a iPad be setup for tethered shooting with a Nikon Camera
Not as a standalone solution if you want stuff like live view and all the camera controls on the iPad. If it's just for transferring photos to the iPad for immediate viewing after shooting the Shuttersnitch app comes to mind. Shuttersnitch however requires a WiFi connection that most Nikons don't happen to have. Nikon's wireless dongles for the consumer range of cameras are also somewhat awkward to use whereas the wireless/Ethernet units for the pro range happen to be very expensive. WiFi SD-cards are also a possibility for retrofitting WiFi but they tend to be unreliable, slow and their setup is quite often finicky.
Another solution would be tethering the camera to a laptop (Win or Mac) through USB and connecting the iPad as a secondary wireless tethering device to the computer. There are programs for Mac and Windows incorporating this feature. I once set this up for a friend who does a lot of studio work but it ended up that he just uses the USB-connected laptop almost exclusively. And unless one would be out for a timelapse shooting already carrying tons of gear not a solution for shooting in the field.
Last not least but also not exactly inexpensive is the Camranger remote control for Nikon and Canon DSLRs. It connects to the camera through USB and has its own server and WiFi built in which allows to connect to iOS, Android, Mac and Windows (apps for all available by Camranger themselves). Probably the most flexible and comfortable solution especially when considering that it can be used for multiple cameras and will mot likely also work with future cameras. More information can be found at https://www.camranger.com (I'm in no way affiliated with them and personally don't own a Camranger remote so I would advise some more web research on user experiences).
Thanks Tom. That maybe my only option for right now. We will see what happens on the camera side and apple how they will handle this issue. Thank you for the time. It's nice to know, other folks have the same question, there is someone out there to give advice.
Thanks

The short answer is yes. There is of course a big however involved. The Image Capture application (usually in the Applications folder) will allow tethered camera shooting from any Mac running OS X. In the early days of OS X Image Capture included a feature to create a web server on the Mac that gave access to both the photos on the camera, and allow triggering the shutter through the web. So you could run a web browser on the iPad ( or any browser ) and have some minimal remote capability.
the web interface appears to be gone in version 6 and above of Image Capture, although it is still in the description on the support page, but with some work you could build the same capability using the built in Apache server ( or download Node.JS) and use the apple events in Image Capture as a server side script.
There should be be an easier way, especially since the capability used to be there...
What does your 3 year too late reply have to with the OP's question about shooting with a Nikon camera PHYSICALLY tethered to an iPad.
Your 3 year old reply is waay late and your solution isn't even relevent since your reply involves a Mac and a Mac that, apparently, no longer has a feature that used to support your irrevelent reply.
Be good to read the whole post before offering your sage advice to a 3 year old posting!
I Admit to the late posting.. my bad. However, folks like me refer back to these discussions for quite a while, and I personally appreciate any relevant postings, however delayed. If this is deemed inappropriate, my apologies.
yes, I did read the whole post. The OP did not specify how the camera was tethered, and I took a bit of a leap, based on my circumstances.
if you have additional information regarding using IM, however, I would be very interested.
thanks for the help.
this should do it:
How To Tether Your Camera To An Ipad Without Jailbreaking - YouTube
This video is 6 years old and the YouTuber is using a 7 year old, 2010 iPad 1 model.
This may or may not be STILL supported on later iPad models.
