Clarification: How to copy entire contents of i...

MBP 2012 won't start up. Progress bar only goes halfway. Laptop is not backed up. I'm not sure if the HD is dead or if computer is overloaded.

How do I copy contents of internal hard drive to external drive using Disk Utility?

Once contents is on external drive, how do I erase MBP, partition, journal (or not? I know nothing about that stuff!), get rid of junk and then transfer back to MBP from external drive (providing the MBP internal HD is indeed still okay)?

I don't know if that makes my question clearer or not!

Thanks!

GB

I'd try to use Target Disk Mode to copy files off your sad Mac (Use target disk mode to share files between two Mac computers - Apple Support) if you have another Mac handy.

When reinstalling the OS, you're going to need a few things. This guide looks quite comprehensive: How to reinstall macOS - Apple Support

Is this a Retina or non-Retina MacBook Pro? Non-Retina versions have a CD/DVD slot on the right-hand side. If it's non-Retina, another option is removing the hard disk and using an external USB adapter to connect the disk to a different computer to recover data from it.

Thanks, iEvan!

When you say remove the hard drive, do you mean actually opening up the case a removing it? Why would it work better outside the case rather than inside? Is that circumventing the "start up" entirely?

If you don't have another Mac handy, using Target Disk Mode will not help you.

Disk Utility has a very cryptic command called "recover". This article tells how to make a copy one way (such as internal to external).

Use Disk Utility to Clone a Mac's Drive

Later, you could copy it all it back the other way, or do a re-install and then selectively copy stuff by hand, or use Setup Assistant after a re-install to tell your mac, "the stuff is over there" (on the external drive) and it would pull in your Accounts, files, and Applications for you.
