How do I connect my ipod touch to my car via usb

I have a new ipod touch and I am having issues connecting it to my car. I have tried to use a usb cord but it will not make a sound - my car (2015 ford- sync) says it's attached. Once, it told me I needed to download an app to the ipod but I have not been able to reproduce how the message came up.

Do I need an app or is there something else I need to do for it to play in my car? I do not want to connect it via bluetooth because it kicks my phone out and I can't use it.

Have you checked to see if your Sync software is up to date? I believe you can do so on Ford’s site
