2016 Macbook Pro 15" Palm Rejection Issue
I've had my 2016 Macbook Pro 15" for about a week now, and I love most of it except for the fact that the palm rejection on the track pad is not nearly good enough for (my) normal typing. I'm a longtime MacBook Pro user, and have never had any issues with any trackpad while typing, but cannot make it more than 1 sentence on this model without the cursor doing something crazy and typing intra-sentence 2 paragraphs up. It's incredibly annoying.
I've resorted to simply keeping my wrists fully elevated while typing, but that is both uncomfortable and ridiculous for a $3k laptop. Are there any settings I can adjust or programs I can download to improve the palm rejection on this MacBook Pro? Any suggestions are appreciated.
Best,
David
The only time I've seen this happen is when you have Tap to Click turned on. The only technique to resolve the issue I've discovered that isn't too onerous is to turn off Tap to Click. (It's off by default.) If you never turned it on, then I can't recommend anything. Yes, one shouldn't have to work around the problem, but perhaps that will help. I, too, have never had this problem on my Macbook Air (2011), but experienced on the Macbook 12 inch (2016), the Macbook Pro 13 inch (2016, non Touch Bar) and Macbook Pro 13 inch Touch Bar.
have the very same issue David..... been a MBP user forever...and never had this problem... agree that now I have to keep wrists elevated off the deck... the wrist rests are completely useless cuz the trackpad is so big... I keep accidentally sending unfinished emails cuz the cursor goes somewhere random, and I keep typing til the letters do something crazy to the app....
this is very very frustrating.... will Apple or somebody figure out how to adjust??? I realize it's sensitive to be responsive, but it's really bad....
in fact it happened about 5 or 6 times just typing this note
AARRRGGGGHHHH!!!!!!
The new trackpad is so large, it takes TWO trackpad controllers to service it. From Users' reports, it appear the software to control this big trackpad suffers from communication problem between the two halves as well (for example, three finger gestures where fingers are placed on both sides of the midline do not always register correctly.)
Having the same problem on my brand new 13" Pro. Very annoying so far.
If you can put your MacBook on a lower surface when you have a lot to type, your palms will naturally move away from the trackpad a bit and reduce the problem somewhat. Table height is less than ideal for typing position. Professional typists used to use a lower surface than desk/table height.
That's cute. Insteading of putting pressure on Apple to fix their poor design lets instead try to tow the "you're holding on it wrong" party line.
I expect they already know about this and folks are working nights and weekends on a fix.
You can try putting pressure on Apple if it makes you feel better. But the place to do that is at the genius bar or on the Phone to Applecare support. Everyone here is a volunteer.
In the meantime, I have provided some "work-arounds". If you do not find them helpful, please ignore them.

This might not be the answer you'd expect, but I have quite severe carpal tunnel issues, and was told by several therapists that if you have to do extended keyboarding, the worst thing for your wrists is to rest them on ANYTHING, even a padded wrist rest. It's preferable to keep them suspended, as if playing the piano. Besides preserving your carpal tunnels, it would also address the issue caused by the oversized track-pad.
I too have this problem. Note I have many other issues with the new MacBook Pro, but will settle for solving this issue.
Extremely frustrated.
Agree with your complaint. Someone at apple seems to think that if a large-ish trackpad was good, then a hilariously oversized trackpad must be better.
I tried covering the edges of the trackpad with paper but the trackpad (mis-)senses input through the paper.
Hopefully apple will put out a software update that will allow users to simply reject most of the hilariously oversized trackpad area. I dont need more than the usual small rectangle in the center of the trackpad.
Also hitting touch bar buttons by accident all the time. I basically disabled touch bar as much as possible in preferences to avoid this.
A lot of awful design decisions in this new macbook. Removal of magsafe, the new keyboard is horrible, etc.
Actually here is a solution I just came upon that helps mitigate this issue for me.
I took some electric tape and taped off the edges of the trackpad, where my palm tends to accidentally hit it.
The first piece of electric tape doesnt work - trackpad (mis-)sense through it. However a second piece of tape over the first one seems to do the trick.
I just taped around the edge of the trackpad and now my "palm rejection" is much more satisfactory thanks to a physical barrier blocking off most of this hilariously oversized track pad.
It also peels off pretty easily and has not left a mark on the machine either (I peeled off once just to see).
Hopefully this may help others as well.
Now if I could figure out how to block off accidental input to the touch bar, that would be excellent so I could use it without accidentally sending off emails I am in the middle of composing, etc.
Thank you! It was driving me crazy and this fixed it.
+1 this.
I too have many issues with this new hardware. They all seem minute but for a machine costing this much.....
same here with the touchpad and battery issues. just got off the chatbox with tech support and they weren't helpful or very courteous. genius bar is next
