cannot enable "Allow your Apple Watch to unlock...

First off, I've been using this feature for a long while just fine. That is, until now.

I had to reset my MBP's NVRAM for a different reason, but once I did that, I noticed that the unlock feature was turned off. I then went to the Security & Privacy preference to enable it. However, it spins for a while (saying "Turning on...") and then fails saying "Your Mac was unable to communicate with your Apple Watch." See the included photo.

Comparing before and after, the only thing that happened was resetting NVRAM.

I tried a few suggestions I found on the internet, including logging out and in the iCloud account both on the computer and the iPhone, but it didn't fix it.

Is there a way to diagnose this and restore this feature? Thanks!
